ATTENTION ALL RETIREES! INDIANA KEEPS YOUR TAXES ON A STAYCATION AFTER YOU MOVE (FUN!)

When you move, a surprising number of things change. Your address. Your neighbors. Possibly your favorite pizza place. And—because this is America—your state and county income taxes.

Now, here’s the fun part: telling the Fund office your new address does not automatically update your state or county tax withholdings. Of course it doesn’t. That would make sense.

To change your withholdings, you’ll need to complete and submit a brand-new WH-4P form.

And here’s where it gets truly special:

Any county withholding changes you make during the year will not take effect until January 1 of the following year. Why? Because the state of Indiana says so. That’s it. No appeal, no mid-year flexibility, no explanation beyond “them’s the rules.”

Yes, you read that correctly. The Indiana Department of Revenue actually mandates this. Apparently, they’d really like your tax dollars to enjoy one last extended vacation in the county you no longer live in. Call it a nostalgic farewell tour for your money.

The good news is you can compensate by adjusting your overall withholding—up or down—by submitting a new WH-4P form. Bureaucracy giveth, bureaucracy taketh away, bureaucracy then hands you a form.

To get the form:

  • Call the Fund office at 219-940-6181, or
  • Visit the Plan’s website and access the Pension Withholding Change Form – Retiree Only at www.ibew697benefits.org

Paperwork may be eternal—but at least now you know which hoop to jump through, and when the state will finally allow it to count.
